Reading Blog | The Kingdom of Back

Copy of the perks of being noura

And another reading blog post is in session!

Over the last couple of days I’ve been reading The Kingdom of Back by Marie Lu (Thank you Penguin International for the gifted review copy and box of goodies!). This was my first Marie Lu book and I’m honestly so intrigued to read her other books now. Proceed to see what my reading days were like with this magical book! Oh and don’t worry there aren’t any spoilers here ๐Ÿ’™

Hello! and welcome to another reading blog with yours truly. I was going to start House of Earth and Blood after finishing Chain of Gold the other day but I though I’d read something light before going into that massive book. Therefore, I’m starting The Kingdom of Back by Marie Lu today!

I’m starting off with this lovely box of goodies that I received the other day from Penguin International (A huge thank you to them!). This is one of my highly anticipated of the year and I’m so hoping I’ll love it.

Okay, first this book has the most beautiful maps! there’s one at the beginning and another one at the end of the book. I’m obsessed with them ๐Ÿ˜ but either way, It’s 6:40 PM and I’m 40 pages into the book. This story sounds so intriguing! I can already feel the magic. Need to stop for some time because I’ve got some blogging to do and I’m baking some Cinnamon bread!

“Sometimes, a day comes along that seems possessed by a certain shade of magic. You know those moments.”

Update time! I read….only 50 pages. For someone who now has plenty of time (with university being off) I clearly am doing everything except reading. The book is interesting but a tiny bit slow. I’m sure it will pick up soon. Hopefully by the time I hit the 100 page mark.

Wednesday 11th of March

My plan for today was to get up early and get some reading in but clearly that didn’t happen. So I woke up late and because of that I missed my online French class. I found this funny considering that I always manage to wake up early and go to uni but somehow I can’t wake up for an online class that I’ll be taking in my living room? so there’s that. And here I am at 8:20 PM sitting in front of this laptop blogging instead. Hopefully there will be reading today. Hopefully.

‘This was the game between us. He would ask me questions. I would invent answers for him, and slowly, our story would grow.’

Thursday 12th of March

So even though I had really hoped I’d sit down and read last night I clearly did the complete opposite of that. But today’s a new day! and I fixed my reading situation. I’m now 104 page in. The book is a Mozart retelling with magic and fantasy but it’s also giving me Peter Pan vibes. It’s slow but where I stopped seems to be where things start picking up.

Saturday 14th of March

Yesterday was a bust. I ended up reading some pages for an ARC I was sent instead. But I did read a good amount today…at 2 AM. I just finished my midterm for one of my classes and now I can finally go back to reading! I’m now at the 130 page mark. The book is historical fiction which is a genre I’m not used to so I might take a lot longer reading this than my usual.

It’s now 5:53 PM and I just read up until page 200. The story definitely picked up. The story is really unique and I’m actually enjoying it a lot more right now. Currently the book is at the 3 star mark (which is good to me) but I’m so hoping that it will get a lot better. I’ve now got 160 something pages left to finish. I don’t know if I’ll keep reading tonight but I suppose I’ll start setting goals to finish it soon.

Sunday 15th of March

I’m finally finished! I feel like it has been ages when in fact it has only been 5 days. The story definitely picked up a little at the 200 page mark. It sped up and slowed often but I definitely enjoyed the second half of the book more. I’m honestly really happy I got to read this! the story is a very different retelling than we’re used to. I also really love Marie Lu’s writing. I’m going to have a review up in the coming days, but if you like historical fiction with a touch of magic you should definitely pick this up!

  1. The Kingdom of Back was such an interesting read! I also really enjoyed the maps that were included in the book. My university is also closed until this Wednesday (and then we move to online classes ๐ŸŽ‰) so I’ve been using the past few days to try and catch up on all my library reads before they expire. Great post!!

    • Thank you! The maps were beautiful! Especially the end ones ๐Ÿ˜ Ah it’s getting pretty hectic isn’t it? I’m finding more time to do things but the pandemic is freaking me out. Stay safe! ๐Ÿ’•

  2. Loved reading this! This book sounds interesting, but since it is historical fiction, I’m a bit hesitant about picking it up!
