Author Interview | Lori M. Lee, Author of Forest of Souls

author interview (1)

Today’s interview brings someone absolutely wonderful!

I’ve been given the pleasure of interviewing Lori M. Lee today! She wrote some amazing works including A Thousand Beginnings and EndingsGates of Thread and Stone, and the upcoming Forest of Souls! I’ve asked her a couple of questions relating to her upcoming release, some of her favorite reads, and much more!

I can’t explain how excited I am for Forest of Souls and I wanted to know what inspired you to write this story?

LORI: The funny thing is that I’ve been working on this story for so long, that I can’t exactly remember what the initial plot inspiration was haha. What I do remember, though, is that I’d read a series of books in which the friendship between best friends was strained for petty reasons, and they spent the majority of the book angry with each other. I was so frustrated, because all I wanted was a book in which the girls could have an unconditional friendship free of petty drama and contrived misunderstandings. I wanted them to support each other through whatever trials the plot threw at them, and instead, I got stereotypical cattiness. So with Forest of Souls, I deliberately center a friendship between girls. Despite that the plot strains their relationship in massive ways, they remain loyal and true to one another, because having that support is how they make it through.

Can you give a brief summary on what Forest of Souls is about for those who haven’t come across it yet?

LORI: Sure! Forest of Souls is about Sirscha, a spy-in-training, who discovers she’s a soulguide, a shaman with the rare power to shepherd souls. She’s tasked with controlling the Dead Wood, an ancient forest possessed with malevolent spirits, that’s grown wild and dangerous, and threatens the peace between kingdoms.

Are there any authors that have inspired you?

LORI: My earliest inspirations were R.L. Stine and Tolkien. The Fear Street books played a huge role in nursing my love of reading and writing in my elementary school years, and my earliest stories were teen horror (because we learn at that age by mimicking, right?). Then I found The Hobbit at my local library, and my whole world was changed haha. I’d found what I wanted to write–sweeping epic fantasy. It inspired my first novel, which was a self-insert portal fantasy romance. Nowadays, I’m hugely inspired by authors like Leigh Bardugo, Holly Black, Neil Gaiman, Naomi Novik, N.K. Jemisin, and really, all my fellow authors who push me to keep doing my best.

If you could swap places with a fictional character (whether your own or otherwise) who would you be?

LORI: I think I’d want to swap places with a pampered house cat or something, because then they wouldn’t have to deal with whatever the characters are going through haha. Less stress is always the goal.

So, let’s say you’re stranded on an island and you only have three books with you. What would those three books be?

LORI: This is impossible. But let’s say the next three books to be published by my favorite authors so at least it’ll be new material to read!

What’s your favorite thing to do when you aren’t writing?

LORI: Besides reading, of course, I love listening to podcasts. Some of my favorites are Write or Die, Book Friends Forever, 88 Cups of Tea, Deadline City, Myths and Legends, and Spirit Podcast. After that, I also enjoy being a vegetable and playing World of Warcraft.

Any future projects that we should look forward to?

LORI: I just turned in the sequel to Forest of Souls, which will be out next year! And I recently announced that the Shamanborn series is now a trilogy rather than a duology, so there will be a third book as well! Aside from that, please keep an eye out on my twitter for upcoming announcements that I’m super duper excited about but can’t talk about yet haha.

Thank you to Lori M. Lee for agreeing to do this interview!

  1. I would very much like to be a cat in a book as well. Specially Church from the Shadowhunter Chronicles. I’m really excited for Forest Of Souls, so it’s really great news that it’s gonna be a trilogy!
