I am so excited to read The Storm Crow! I’ve heard wonderful things about it! Could you start by telling us what inspired you to write it?

Kalyn: Thank you so much! TSC was inspired by a story I read about a little girl who fed her neighborhood crows. They brought her gifts in return, and that relationship between them inspired an idea of a society centered on the magic of giant crows.

Can you give a brief summary on what The Storm Crow is about for those who haven’t come across it yet?

Kalyn: Sure! It’s a Young Adult fantasy about a girl who ignites a rebellion to bring back the magical, elemental crows that were taken from her people.

What advice would you give to aspiring authors?

Kalyn: Read widely. If you want to write in a genre or age category, read A LOT within them. You need to know the market and know what’s successful and why.

Was becoming an author always a dream of yours or did you dream of being something else before that?

Kalyn: It was always a dream in the back of my mind. I never thought I’d actively pursue it, at least not until college. Before that, I wanted to be a marine biologist!

Are there any authors that have inspired you?

Kalyn: Lots, but Laini Taylor’s book, DAUGHTER OF SMOKE AND BONE, is what inspired me to try writing a book of my own. I loved it so much, and I wanted to be able to do what she did.

Are there any books you’d recommend?

Kalyn: Sooo many. But to name a few: THE TETHERED MAGE, by Melissa Caruso, OF SILVER AND SHADOW, by Jennifer Gruenke, and FOUL IS FAIR by Hannah Capin.

If you could swap places with a fictional character (whether your own or otherwise) who would you be?

Kalyn: Ooh, tough! I’d love to swap with one of the side characters in Harry Potter, just to get to go Hogwarts, or one of the hobbits in the Shire! Someone where I can hang out in the world without being in the direct line of fire of the plot.

So, let’s say you’re stranded on an island and you only have three books with you. What would those three books be?

Kalyn: THE STARLESS SEA by Erin Morgenstern, NINTH HOUSE by Leigh Bardugo, and STRANGE THE DREAMER by Laini Taylor.

Any future projects that we should look forward to?

Kalyn: The sequel to THE STORM CROW, THE CROW RIDER, is out on July 7th of this year! Other than that, I can’t talk about any other projects, but I’m definitely working on new stuff.

What’s your favorite thing to do when you aren’t writing?

Kalyn: Baking! Bread, cookies, muffins, you name it, I bake it.

Thank you to Kalyn Josephson for agreeing to do this interview!
