Weekly Reading Blog | Rereading City of Bones for the first time in 9 years

This blog post has been a long time coming. It might not be known to you over here, but I’m a huge Shadowhunters fan. The series started my reading journey. I had only read a few series before I started this one and although I loved those, none made me feel like this one did. It had everything I was looking for in a book and here I am still in love with the characters and the world like no time has passed at all. The last time I read The Mortal Instruments was nine year ago (still can’t believe it has been that long) and I’ve been thinking about rereading them ever since. The time has finally come! I’m a little scared to read them but I have a feeling I’ll love them just as much as I did the first time. So here we go!

So, I splurged on something special over the weekend. I’ve been wanting The Mortal Instruments box set for ages. Ever since I saw the new covers I’ve been dying to get my hands on it. Something came over me last weekend and I just bought it. Simple as that. This was definitely the only time I didn’t overthink things, it’s genuinely such a strange phenomena. I still can’t believe it like I’m so happy with this purchase! I have two sets of the books now and no room on the shelf whatsoever but I’m happy regardless.

May be slight spoilers ahead

Day 1 – Sunday May 30th

Progress: 22%

Read a little over 100 pages in one go today and I’m honestly so happy! The book is so good. I thought the writing would feel different than what i’m used to from Cassie but it’s great. I mean she obviously got better with her most recent books but her writing in the beginning was still pretty amazing. I got hooked from the first few pages all over again. It also feels really strange to be back at the beginning, where it all started. I can see how different the character are now from the way they were.

Jace is still as sassy as ever. A little guarded but still willing to open up a little. I know a lot of people don’t like Clary because they think she’s annoying, but I don’t think I would act any different. For one she’s fifteen, second she has been through hell of a lot so far and being thrust into this world will make anyone antsy. Seeing Alec too is so strange. He was so wound up in these books and now he’s a complete cinnamon roll. I’m actually pretty excited to see the development!

Day 2 – Tuesday June 2nd

Progress: 40%

I’ve reached page 204 now. I’m trying to take this slow because I don’t want to rush through it like it’s a race or something. So far I’m enjoying it! It can be a little cheesy at times but I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t loving this. I truly miss the simpler times. I love these characters so much and it’s probably because I’ve seen them develop throughout most of Cassie’s books that I just feel like crying over them all now.

As of right now Clary has gone to the Silent City and in the next chapter we’re going to see Magnus Bane and I’m so excited for this!

Day 3 – Friday June 4th

Progress: 61%

We finally met Magnus! Even though he’s mostly a constant in the Shadowhunter books, I can’t help but get excited whenever he shows up. Clary has learned some stuff about her mother and her past, Simon got turned into a rat and taken by vampires, and we had a little (not really) altercation between the vampires and werewolves. I love it! I remember these part specifically and reading them again reminded me why I enjoyed them. I’m hopefully going to continue tomorrow. I’m aiming for 100 pages a day and I’ve managed them so far. Lets hope this continues.

Day 4 – Saturday June 4th

Progress: 80%

Almost done with the book! I’ve got a headache at the moment so I’ll be saving what’s left for later. So happy with this reread that’s for sure.

Day 5 – Saturday June 11th

Progress: Finished reading City of Bones

And we’re done! I could have finished those few pages any day but I’m the queen of putting things off so 🤷‍♀️ Anyways, I ended up giving the book 5 stars. The book brought back the best memories. The series that got me into reading and the world that I love and follow to this day. No matter how many flaws I find in these books they will always remain favourites to be honest. I enjoyed this reread so much! I’d forgotten a lot of what went on here and I’m even more excited to reread the rest of the books.

Are there any books you’re hoping to reread this year?

  1. Looks like you had a good week!
I’m currently in the middle of rereding the Iron Fey series, and really enjoying it!

  2. This one is really lovely to read! I don’t think I will ever reread this series but if I do, I would probably feel the same way about going back to where it all started and seeing where they are now :’) And wow, I forgot Clary was 15 in this book!
