Horror Movie Journey | All the horror movies I’ve watched so far + my thoughts

One of those posts that I never thought I would write. You know, for someone who has always loved spooky and creepy things, I don’t know why it took me this long to get into horror. In a way, I’m not really upset by it. I believe we all discover things at the right time and horror happened to be something I discovered I loved about a year and a half ago. Would I have appreciated horror if I had found it sooner? I don’t know, but I’m happy with how it turned out regardless.

I’ve decided that every few months I’m going to write a post with all the horror movies I’ve seen since I last posted. Just to keep you in the loop as I continue my horror movie journey. Read on to see all the movies I’ve seen so far, along with a little of my thoughts!

Note: These are not in order of when I watched them.

Scream is one of my favourite movies ever. I’ve seen it about 3 times since the first time. I knew this was a well loved movie and the best part for me was that I didn’t know anything about it. I went into this not knowing what to expect (except slasher, obviously) and was so surprised by the whole movie it instantly became a favourite.

⭑⭑⭑⭑⭑

Scream 2 was pretty good. I didn’t love it as much as the first one but I definitely really enjoyed it. The reveal felt a little on the silly side but I love that these movies don’t take themselves too seriously.

⭑⭑⭑⭑

As much as I enjoyed the sequel I can’t say I felt the same about this one. The movies in this franchise are always fun but I honestly didn’t like Scream 3 so much. Wasn’t my favourite in the franchise.

⭑⭑⭑

Scream 4 I really loved. It was much more modern than the previous movies and so so good. A lot more gore too which was an obvious plus.

⭑⭑⭑⭑

When I finished the 4th film this one had just dropped in cinema. I knew I had to experience it on the big screen and I’m so glad I did. Scream 5 was perfect. There was so much suspense, and the killer reveal wasn’t what I was expecting at all. I freaking loved this one. So excited for the next one!

⭑⭑⭑⭑⭑

Case 39 was my very first horror movie. I saw it ages ago and although it didn’t scare me as much as I thought it would, I never saw another horror movie after it. I rewatched it this year just to see if I would feel differently about it. Creepy but not the best.

⭑⭑⭑

Annabelle was my introduction to the world of The Conjuring. The first 30 minutes of the movie is my favourite. It became less scary to me as the movie went on. Still, a solid one.

⭑⭑⭑

Annabelle: Creation is possibly my favourite of the three Annabelle movies. I’ve seen this one three time (watched with other people). This one is the creepiest to me and the best. So many favourite moments in this one.

⭑⭑⭑⭑

The Conjuring is one of my favourite horror movies. I loved this the first time I saw it. I loved it even more the second time around. One of those movies that I get really excited to see with people who have never seen it. I basically recommend this to everyone.

⭑⭑⭑⭑⭑

The Conjuring 2 I also really loved. These movies always have me on edge. The visuals were so good and I remember a few great jump scares. I wish I had seen these in cinema but I have the others to look forward to I guess.

⭑⭑⭑⭑⭑

I’m sad to say that I didn’t love The Conjuring 3 as much as the first two. Something about this one just felt off. It wasn’t scary to me either. I’m hoping 4 will follow in the previous to movies footsteps.

⭑⭑⭑

The Nun was a tad bit boring. I was expecting a lot more scary than what we got. I also wanted to see more of the Nun since its’s you know, her movie. Alas, it didn’t give what I hoped it would.

⭑⭑.5

I did not know what kind of horror to expect from Hereditary. It’s one of those movies where the more you think about it the creepier it gets. Especially when you notice the little things in the back. The things you might have missed. I just love how uncomfortable this movie made me. Not to mention that one scene that made me gasp out loud.

⭑⭑⭑⭑⭑

Another movie I love to bits is A Quiet Place. Man, did I love this movie. They could make 50 movies and I’d be happy about it.

⭑⭑⭑⭑⭑

Surprise surprise, I loved A Quiet Place 2 as well. There’s just something about these movies that I love. And I’m talking about something other than the constant stress I’m in.

⭑⭑⭑⭑⭑

I know quite a few people who didn’t like Malignant but I actually really enjoyed it. Weird in a lot more ways than one but fun. I also didn’t see the twist coming so it gets extra stars for surprising me.

⭑⭑⭑.5

After seeing Scream I knew I had to try I Know What You Did Last Summer. I really loved this one too. Not as much as Scream, obviously, but it was definitely what I was looking for.

⭑⭑⭑⭑

I Still Know What You Did Last Summer missed something. The premise felt a bit too silly and I kinda disliked a lot of things in this movie. Also, the ending?

⭑⭑⭑

I loved A Nightmare on Elm Street! This was one of the ones my mother told me I had to watch and I looooved it. One of the ones that stayed creepy after so many years.

⭑⭑⭑⭑⭑

I remember seeing Sorority Row and it was just meh. Didn’t enjoy it then and I doubt I would now to be honest.

⭑⭑.5

I love a witchy movie and The Craft fit that bill. Really really enjoyed this one.

⭑⭑⭑⭑

Mama was recommended to me by a friend. I actually remember when the trailer dropped. I remember saying I’m not seeing that one. My life is clearly full of surprises. I enjoyed it but not in the horror sense. Sometimes it felt a little more artistic than scary. Especially with mama herself.

⭑⭑⭑⭑

I knew I had to watch the classics when I started horror. Halloween was one of the first to come to mind. I was expecting to see guts and bloods but this is where it all started.

⭑⭑⭑⭑

Halloween II was less impressive than I’d hoped.

⭑⭑⭑

I skipped 3 and jumped straight to Halloween 4. I still don’t really know how I feel about this one. It took a turn I wasn’t expecting. Honestly all the movies too turns I wasn’t expecting.

⭑⭑⭑

I enjoyed Halloween H20 a lot more than expected. There was definitely a lot more blood in this than the previous movies.

⭑⭑⭑.5

I’m glad to say I finally saw Chucky. I remember as a kid everyone was always talking about. Child’s Play was actually pretty fun.

⭑⭑⭑⭑

I liked the first movie much more than Child’s Play 2. I haven’t seen another Chucky movie since but I guess I’ll have to work on that?

⭑⭑⭑

World War Z was my first zombie movie. I remember a lot of jump scares and a lot more gore than I could handle at the time (Saw this probably more than 10 years ago)

⭑⭑⭑⭑

One of the movies I was looking forward to the most was The Exorcist. People talk about this movie all the time. I bit the bullet and watched it. Let me tell you, I loved this movie so so much. I enjoyed every minute of this. I’ve been trying to convince a lot of people to see it since then (it hasn’t worked).

⭑⭑⭑⭑⭑

I really enjoyed Lights Out. The concept was freaky. It did feel kinda rushed in places though, and I do wish there had been much more of a backstory.

⭑⭑⭑

Would Dark Shadows be considered horror? I honestly don’t know. I’ve seen it labelled as horror but anyway. I adore Tim Burton’s movies. This one wasn’t the greatest but I enjoyed it for the most part. Plus, anything with Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter is on my list.

⭑⭑⭑

I adore Beetlejuice. I would watch this movie a million times. Feels like. a fever dream the entire time you’re watching it.

⭑⭑⭑⭑⭑

I remember Warm Bodies being funny but also disgusting. Honestly, I think I need a rewatch.

⭑⭑⭑⭑

The Amityville Horror was weird on a lot of levels. Still not sure how I feel about this movie. I also don’t think I’ve ever seen Ryan Renolds anything other than himself so this was definitely…an experience.

⭑⭑⭑

I’ll be real honest here, I didn’t like The Ring as much as most. I think my expectations were a little too high (just like when I read the book). I was bored a lot of the time and honestly? I wish there had been more Samara. Girl, where did you go?

⭑⭑⭑

I present to you Shaun of the Dead, one of my favourite zombie movies ever. Or is it movies in general?

⭑⭑⭑⭑

I love this movie. Midsommar was what I decided to watch first when I got into horror. It wasn’t exactly scary but it made me so flipping uncomfortable. I loved it.

⭑⭑⭑⭑

I was expecting a lot more from James Wan. Dead Silence did not impress me at all. I was bored a lot of the time. The ending was surprising but that’s about it.

⭑⭑

I hated this. Jamie Lee Curtis is on the poster but did we actually see her? Not for more than 5 minutes. Halloween Resurrection was sadly a waste of time for me.

I enjoyed Halloween (2018) a lot! the level of blood and gore I was hoping for. Haven’t seen the last movie yet but so excited!

⭑⭑⭑⭑

Halloween Kills was not as good as the first one. So much annoyed me to be honest.

⭑⭑⭑.5

Run had one hell of a plot twist. Wasn’t expecting that twist to be the case.

⭑⭑⭑⭑

Thirteen Ghosts was not a favourite. The movie had some good moments. I watched it because of Matthew Lillard mostly.

⭑⭑⭑

The Babadook was not what I was expecting to be completely honest with you. I get the whole point of the movie and I appreciate what it brought to screen. I do wish we had seen more of the Babadook though.

⭑⭑⭑

I’ll never understand my thought process behind deciding to watch The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. I’ve never been interested in it and even after getting into horror I wasn’t planning on watching it. I somehow ended up watching it and I confirmed the fact that I’m not really a fan.

⭑⭑

Nocturne was an excuse to see Sydney Sweeney kill it at another role. This movie was bizarre in a lot of ways but I really enjoyed it. It was different in a lot of ways.

⭑⭑⭑

The Lighthouse was far too strange, even for me. It took a while for me to actually get into it. The acting was phenomenal as always but the story was…something else.

⭑⭑.5

I know a lot of people really loved Ouija: Origin of Evil. I didn’t love it but it was a pretty good one. I know the first movie didn’t do well at all but I think I’ll give it a watch.

⭑⭑⭑

There was a whole lot going on in Annabelle Come Home. And all that so we can come down to the culprit that is (as always) Annabelle. The second movie remains my favourite.

⭑⭑⭑.5

I think the kid in The Grudge scared me more than anything else, but that’s the case for a lot of people isn’t it? This had some fun moments. Really think I should watch the Japanese ones.

⭑⭑⭑

1408 is one of the first horror movies I watched with my dad. He saw it years ago and decided we should see it together. I really enjoyed this one. Pretty wild sometimes and had me wondering where it was headed.

⭑⭑⭑

The Sixth Sense is one of the best for me. I saw a part of it years ago and finally saw the entire thing. I love this movie.

⭑⭑⭑⭑⭑

I was not expecting what I saw in Sinister at all. That ending really messed me up to be honest. The tapes were highly uncomfortable and the ending was even more eerie.

⭑⭑⭑⭑

Alien was a treat. I loved the gore in this to be honest, and I loved how surprised everyone was (including myself) about the jump scares and gore.

⭑⭑⭑⭑

Please don’t hate me for this the The Black Phone was good but I guess I was expecting a little more. I had read the short story before seeing this and although I knew what to expect I was still hoping for a little bit more.

⭑⭑⭑

Insidious has been on my list for so long. I will admit, I was expecting a lot more. Everyone was telling me how scary it was and to be honest it didn’t do it for me but I enjoyed it I suppose.

⭑⭑⭑

I watched Umma on the plane a few weeks ago. Extra nice experience when the lights are off. It was creepy and I’m now adding old people to the list of things that freak you out in horror movies.

⭑⭑⭑

I really thought these movies would be scary and honestly I’m not a fan. Okay maybe not scary scary but at least you know something. Insidious Chapter 2 was okay I suppose. Poor second child always ignored but anyhow.

⭑⭑.5

The Curse of La Llorona was an interesting movie. A bit predictable but not in a bad way.

⭑⭑⭑

Went into X without really knowing what it was about (don’t ask me how) and although this whole thing was bizarre, I gotta say, the gore was really on point. I need to see Pearl next, that’s for sure.

⭑⭑⭑

Don’t Worry Darling was one of my highly anticipated of the year. That was before all the drama came out. I kinda lost interest after that but I was looking forward to seeing Florence Pugh. The movie was just okay. It was longer than it should have been in my opinion. It also wasn’t that great. I just wanted to see how it would end.

⭑⭑.5

Freaky was a random watch. A random but surprisingly fun movie. I actually enjoyed this a lot more than I thought I would. I love slashers it seems and this was a pretty good, and at times funny one.

⭑⭑⭑⭑

Halloween Ends was a huge disappointment! I was so excited for this one and I was not impressed with the direction they went in. I feel like it was separate from the first two movies. I honestly did not enjoy this.

⭑⭑

I don’t know why it took me so long to see Ready or Not. The moment I finished it I knew it was a new favourite of mine. One of my favourite movies I’ve seen this year.

⭑⭑⭑⭑⭑

Suspiria took me by complete surprise. It had so many amazing horror moments and I was thoroughly impressed by it. Really want to see the latest movies as well.

⭑⭑⭑⭑

The Grudge (2020) was a strange experience. The plot jumped a lot which took me a minute to figure out which timelines I was seeing. I feel like this one focused on gore. I mean there wasn’t a lot of it but it definitely felt like that was the focus to me. Definitely liked the original.

⭑⭑

I went into Mr. Harrigan’s Phone with very different expectations. I don’t even know how to explain how this movie made me feel. I was expecting so much more than this. But hey, you win some you lose some.

⭑⭑

I read There’s Someone Inside Your House this year and forgot about the movie completely until I came across it on Netflix the other day. The book was a 3 star read for me and sadly the movie wasn’t the best.

⭑⭑.5

And that’s all I have time for this year! New year is in three days which I still can’t believe to be honest. I know I won’t be watching any horror in the next three days because I’m busy but we’ll see when the first day of 2023 comes along

Are you a horror movie fan?

  1. Great post Noura! I am definitely not a horror fan, in fact I think the only horror movie I’ve watched in its entirety was The Conjuring 😂 It was a good movie, but I felt the fear that the kids had 😂😆

    • Thank you! Honestly take your time. I never got into horror at first because I was always pushed into seeing it. I hated being pressured into things. But I found horror at the right time for me. So just wait until you’re ready to get back into it.

  2. wow, so many horrors. I have been trying to watch more this year and I have enjoyed it, one of my favourites has been Us. I am a big fan of the Scream movies too– the first one is iconic. I felt like the fourth one was the second best, but I have yet to see the 5th one. I’m glad you enjoyed it– I will definitely have to check it out now!
The next on my list is Barbarian, it has good reviews! Hope you discover some good ones next year! 🥰

    • Ooh haven’t seen Us yet but it’s high on my watchlist 😍 the first one will always be my favourite. I saw it again recently. Hope you enjoy the 5th one! It was really intense. Barbarian is also on my list! I really hope we both end up enjoying it. Hope you discover some good new ones too! 🥰

  3. Great movies on this list. I really am for the redemption of Halloween III. It’s campy, the actors are bad, but the story and villians are sickening. I definitely recommend giving a shot, but keep your expectations low.

As for Thirteen Ghosts, I watch that one every year… and it’s still only for Matthew Lillard.
