Supernatural was one of those shows that I kept convincing myself that I wouldn’t watch even though a part of me really really wanted to. Why you might ask? Because when I started they were already in season 12.
I finally gave in and decided to watch this glorious show from scratch and make my way up. In this review I’ll be listing my favorite episodes and my overall thought about the show. Including a little rambling.
So, let’s get started with the review, shall we?
*Might Contain Spoilers*
The series follows the two Winchester brothers, Sam and Dean as they hunt demons, ghosts, monsters, and other supernatural beings. after his wife, Mary, was murdered by an evil supernatural being when the boys were young. 22 years later the brothers set out on a journey, fighting evil along the way, to find their recently missing father, but what they don’t know is that their lives are about to take the most eventful turn ever.
Cast: Jared Padalecki, Jensen Ackles, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, and Jim Beaver.
What I loved about this show was the chemistry. Although they haven’t seen eachother for a while you can still sense that their brotherly bond is still there, and that they’ve always got eachothers backs. The character development throughout the season was perfect.
This season was a bit strange for me if only because you dont know where it’s going. So many questions keep poping up in your head (I mean thats a good thing because you just started, and you’re eager to know what the hell is going on). The episodes were intriguing though! it really kept me busy. There wasn’t just one ghost or spirirt or monster. Each episode had something new.
I was told when I started that the episodes would be scary. That wasn’t true. Creepy? sure. Scary? not really. If you arent used to watching creepy shows or vampires, demons, ghosts, and all that jazz, maybe. I was on edge constantly because I was waiting for something to scare the living existence out of me.
The events that ended the season ruined me. So many fears and not knowing what will happen next. Then I guess starting late was a good idea wasn’t it?
Top Five Favorite episode
- Bloody Mary: An incantation uttered during a game of truth or dare unleashes a ghost who “lives” in mirrors…and kills by gouging out the eyes of her prey.
Thoughts: The urban legend is that if you say bloody mary infront of a mirror 3 times you’ll summon an evil spirit. I got so excited when I saw the title of the episode. I was expecting creepy and that’s what I got!
- Home: After 22 years, A new family moves into the brothers’ old home, Sam and Dean return to their childhood home and, if Sam’s nightmares are correct, this house has yet another evil hidden inside.
Thoughts: Sam and Dean go back to their old house to find a family living there, and Sam has a nighmare that something bad is about to happen. Not going to ruin the episode for anyone but the twist we got in the end was a complete thumbs up.
- Asylum: The brothers investigate a long-shuttered mental asylum that has the power to drive intruders mad…and murderous.
Thoughts: I remember watching this episode a long long time ago. For years I wondered which season of supernatural it was from. Then the day came for me to finally watch it again and grasp what it was about. Was not disappointed I‘ll tell you that.
Mental aylums in Tv series always give me the hibbie jibbies, and then they always end up being my favorite episodes.
- Provenance: A portrait of a long-dead family has the spirits of the father and daughter trapped inside and someone is murdering its owners.
Thoughts: This one starts off with a couple getting killed after putting up a painting of a family on their mantel. Spooky? for sure. The entire episode I was guessing a certain person to be the one behind it, but boy was I wrong.
- Devils Trap: Sam and Dean race off to rescue their father, resulting in their first showdown between the Winchesters and the Yellow-Eyed Demon they have spent their lives looking for.
Thoughts: This was the final episode of season 1. The conclusion that we got to and the way it ended managed to rip my heart out. It was a week or so before I manged to get the second season. That week was pure agony Im sure you can tell.
With that I conclude this review. I loved the first season and it really did encourage me to continue on. I‘m writing this a bit late (Since i‘m in season 6 now) but I thought I‘d give an idea to those who are hesitant to watch it.
